Beyond the rebrand
A new brand was the starting point — not the finish line. Alongside the visual overhaul, I tackled long-standing UX pain points that had been flagged for years but never prioritised. The result: a product that didn't just look different, but worked better.

Heard, but never fixed
The UX pain points weren't a surprise. They had been flagged through previous usability tests and surfaced repeatedly by the CSM team — direct feedback from customers hitting the same friction points. The issues were known. What was missing was the right moment to solve them.
One opportunity, two deliverables
The rebrand created that moment. As the team was rethinking how the product looked, I made the case to go further — using the opportunity to also fix what wasn't working. A more user-centred product wasn't just a nice addition; it was aligned with the values the new brand was built on. So alongside the visual work, I defined and led a parallel UX workstream to resolve the issues we'd been hearing about for years.
Simplicity at the core
Designed out the confusion
Users were occasionally losing track of where they were in the app — a small confusion with real consequences, like submitting expenses as benefits or the other way around. The navigation selected state wasn't prominent enough to anchor them. During the redesign, we made the active state significantly more visible across both web and mobile, giving users a clear and consistent signal of where they are at all times.

Gave accountants more room to work
Accountants spend a lot of time in lists and drawers — reviewing, processing, approving. We knew from past feedback that they wanted more screen space to focus. The fix was straightforward but meaningful: making the sidebar collapsable on web, so lists and drawers could expand and take over the screen. Less navigation in the way, more room for the work that matters.
Task oriented product
Turned dead ends into starting points
The previous empty states were a standard illustration with a short description — functional, but passive. We saw an opportunity to do more. On expenses and benefits, an empty screen is often the first thing a new user sees, so it made sense to use that moment to orient and guide them. We redesigned the empty states into interactive screens that lay out the available actions clearly, making it easy to scan and pick a starting point. A subtle change that simultaneously reduced uncertainty about where users are in the app and lowered the barrier to getting started.

Brought core actions to the surface
On the previous layout, key receipt actions — download, delete, upload — were buried inside an Options dropdown. Customers were telling us they couldn't find them, sometimes assuming the functionality didn't exist at all. I redesigned the receipt area to expose those actions upfront, making them visible at first glance without any digging required.
Keeping in mind who we design for
Made bulk selection feel reliable
When accountants work with bulk selection to control expenses, knowing exactly which items are selected matters. The previous selected state lacked contrast, making it easy to lose track mid-workflow and forcing users to double-check before every action. We increased the contrast of selected items significantly, so the list is easy to scan at a glance and accountants can move through bulk actions with confidence rather than caution.

Shifted focus to what users came to see
The previous mobile summary list prioritised labels over content — visually, the field names competed with the information users actually cared about. On top of that, customers were struggling to locate attached receipts. We increased the contrast on input values rather than labels, shifting visual weight to what matters, and separated the receipt section from the rest of the expense information. The result: users can scan the summary quickly and always find their receipts, regardless of the expense status.

Users felt it straight away
24 participants tested the new experience across web and mobile — non-customers, internal users, and accountant customers. The response was consistent: cleaner, clearer, simpler, easier. No big friction with the transition, no red flags. The work landed as intended.
